The Inclination Compass - Gareth Jenkins

The Inclination Compass began its life in a WWII bunker chamber south of Wollongong. Its first version was presented as an interactive multimedia festival installation back in 2004. Since then the text and related artworks have continued to evolve, incorporating collage, video works, audio works, ai imagery, sculpture and interactive installations. Many of the artworks from this project will be on display at Disorder in August and September.

For the first time these artworks and text have been brought together in Gareth’s second book, The Inclination Compass, recently released by Puncher and Wattmann. The book will be available at Disorder throughout the exhibition period.

Book Launch and exhibition opening

The book will be launched at 6pm on the 24th of August at Disorder by the Australian author Peter Boyle, who will also read some of his own work. Peter has called the book an ‘experimental tour de force’ – going on to write: ‘With its complex shifting layers and consistent verbal flair The Inclination Compass demonstrates what a fully alive, truly innovative multi-media 21st Century epic poem might look like.’

Gareth is a poet, publisher and multidisciplinary artist. Gareth’s first book, Recipes for the Disaster, won the 2019 Anne Elder award. His poetry short-films have screened at festivals around the world and he exhibits text-based art and multimedia installations.

In 2020 Gareth founded the archive and small press Apothecary Archive and in 2021 he took over the running of one of Australia’s most enduring poetry publishers, Five Islands Press.

His next book, The Inclination Compass, a multimedia poetic narrative will be out in August 2023 with Puncher and Wattmann. In 2024 he is a feature artist at Cementa24.
