Svetlana Prokhorova

Svetlana is a Sydney based visual artist. She has completed Bachelor of Fine Art at the National Art School (majoring in Printmaking), and now continuing her studio-based research on Master of Fine Art program. She is a finalist of several national art prizes in printmaking, and exhibiting around Australia.

Her current project is based on her cultural background which has influenced her aesthetic vision and informed how she approaches her art practice. She investigates the power of Russian Avant-garde and Constructivism aesthetics and uses it as her visual language for the representation of modern urban living. She believes that ideas of the early XX-century European Cubo-Futurists and Russian Constructivists are still relevant today.

Her artistic materials range from paper to fabric. Besides paintings, drawings, and prints, she experiments with wearable art. The concept is - instead of drawing people on the streets, she draws abstract city patterns on clothing, that expresses the sense of co-existence and collaboration between the organic and the industrial environments in the modern city.

Svetlana experiments with symbolic and minimal forms to express her ideas and imaginations, paying attention to colours and shapes. Her artworks often draw viewers’ attention to social issues and motivate people to the inner exploration.

The main medium of her artworks is a manual screen printing in a very limited edition or unique state. In her studio she prefers to use environmentally friendly materials, and thus she only uses water-soluble non-toxic ink and paint.
